How to Save Money on Commercial Heating Bills

Finding a heating system that saves you money on your commercial heating bill isn’t easy. And with commercial buildings varying in size and shape, there’s never a one-size-fits-all solution.

Alaskans especially, pay some of the highest energy costs in the country. According to Alaska Renewable Energy, we pay an estimated $2,800/year in Anchorage to $8,000 in more remote communities.

The culprit? Inefficient heating and lighting equipment, along with poor insulation.

For your business, it’s important to pinpoint how to optimize your energy usage to minimize your heating costs.

But where do you start?

Use multiple zone thermostats (or sensors).

Because of the larger scale and multiple zones of a commercial property, organizing its temperature distribution gets complicated. For example, if you have an office on one end with an empty warehouse on another—how can you spot and convert each location’s temperature flow?

By using programmable thermostats with zoning. Zoning provides optimum comfort and increased energy savings by independently controlling a set temperature per area.

And unlike manual thermostats, programmable thermostats automatically adjust your space’s temperature to maximize the efficiency of your dollar.

Bottom Line: Turning down your thermostat by even one degree can save you almost two percent on your heating bill. Also, make a schedule on your thermostat and stick to it (to further reduce heating costs).

Call a professional to check your HVAC system regularly.

Your heating setup should be checked annually. Plus, if your heating system is older than 15 years, get it evaluated by a professional. See if you can replace it with a higher efficiency heating system instead. And, audit your spaces by checking to see if any of the following are blocked:

  • Air vents
  • Radiators
  • Registers

Preventive maintenance is also key. This is one of the cost-effective ways to keep your commercial systems running at peak performance.

Bottom Line: Lower your risks of a mechanical breakdown early on. Get your HVAC systems installed and serviced with the utmost care and attention to detail. Doing so minimizes downtime and unnecessary repairs while boosting your energy efficiency.

Take action to prevent heat loss.

When heat loss occurs in your commercial spaces, it raises your energy bills while decreasing energy efficiency. Some of the most overlooked issues that cause a rise in your heating bill include:

 1. Cracks in walls, windows, and doors

2. Poorly insulated windows and exterior doors

3. Cracks or holes in ceilings

Bottom Line: Although all commercial properties lose some heat, some spaces lose heat more rapidly than others. We encourage you to identify, diagnose, and take action to prevent heat loss. This will also protect you from high utility bills and breakdowns.
